Election of Bishops – Interim Announced for NWTX Conference

Monday, July 23rd, 2012

The South Central Jurisdictional Conference continued to venture in unchartered territory as it did not assign a bishop to the New Mexico/Northwest Texas Episcopal Area.

The Episcopacy Committee announced an “open position” for the area. The need for an open position is the result of the action of the Committee and the Jurisdictional body in placing Bishop Earl Bledsoe on involuntary retirement. Bledsoe will be a retired bishop as of Aug. 31. He does have the option to appeal the decision.

“We had to leave a position open in the event he (Bledsoe) were to win the appeal and return to active status,” said the Rev. Jeff Lust, Albuquerque District Superintendent and member of the Episcopacy Committee. “We can have too few bishops but not too many bishops.”

The College of Bishops have recommended Bishops William Hutchinson and Dan Solomon be assigned to serve as interims to the New Mexico/Northwest Texas Episcopal Area. The recommendation will be presented for approval to the Council of Bishops executive committee. More information will be provided as it is available.

The Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, who heads the United Methodist Committee on Relief, the denomination’s relief agency, has been elected as a United Methodist bishop by delegates at the South Central Jurisdictional Conference on the 5th ballot. Rev. Harvey is from Big Spring.

The Rev. Gary E. Mueller, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas, was elected as a United Methodist Bishop by delegates at the South Central Jurisdictional Conference. Mueller was elected on the 11th ballot.

The Rev. Mike McKee, senior minister of First United Methodist Church in Hurst, Texas, has been elected as a United Methodist bishop by delegates at the South Central Jurisdictional Conference. McKee was elected on the 23rd ballot.
